The second day of the conference had a tight schedule of four sessions of power packed presentations by invited speakers and paper presenters. There were three sessions on the theme Building Knowledge Repositories: Tools & Technologies. Dr. R.K. Chadha, Joint Secretary, Parliament Library, chaired the session on KM Tools & Technologies. Mr. Ramesh Singh, the Senior Scientist from NIC, analyzed the applications of KM technologies for building repositories for sharing of knowledge. Prof. Newton talked about the subject specification theory for IR systems. Prof. B. Ramesh Babu explained the impact of KM tools & technologies on LIS education. Paper presenters included professionals from leading organizations such as IIM, TCS, UPSC and NIFT.

After lunch
the session on Digital Preservation of Knowledge Resources generated heated
debates as various technologies were discussed threadbare. The session was
moderated by chairperson Prof. Shalini Urs, who also presented the theme
paper in her usual innovative style. The poetic rendition by Ms. Heather
Brown from Artlab, Australia lent the science of digital preservation an
artistic perspective. Mr. Pratapanand Jha, Director(Informatics) of IGNCA
presented the initiatives in building digital repositories of cultural
resources for the mission of preservation of heritage of India. The sole
paper presenter Ms. S. Parikh, Deputy Librarian from IIM, Ahmedabad, shared
her experiences in creating digital repositories at NIFT Gandhinagar during
her tenure there. |

The late
afternoon session was devoted to the theme of intra-sectoral co-opearation
and focused on the Networking of libraries. Ms. Lucy Tedd, a faculty from
the University of Wales, UK, presented a complete overview of the networking
scenario world over with special reference to UK. The Director of INFLIBNET
Dr. Jagdish Arora presented a case study of INFLIBNET highlighting the
advantages of sharing knowledge resources. Dr. H.K. Kaul, the founder of
DELNET, chaired the session and shared his experiences of managing the most
popular network of libraries in India. Various papers were presented by
library professionals engaged in networking initiatives throughout the
country. |
