In the 21st century the growth rate of knowledge capital is the critical index of development of any country. Various sectors contribute to the creation, preservation and dissemination of knowledge. The Libraries, Information Centres, Archives and Museums are the repositories of information and knowledge resources and were there even before Knowledge Management (KM) came into vogue. Now applications of ICTs have generated numerous knowledge repositories in several sectors throughout the world. The networked repositories of tacit communal, organizational and institutional knowledge assets are emerging as knowledge hubs.

The information disseminating and heritage institutions are also increasingly getting woven into the new knowledge tapestry through enabling technologies. The public and private sectors are joining hands to build an inclusive knowledge network world over. Furthermore, various intra and inter-sectoral partnerships are emerging transcending the traditional boundaries dividing the academic sector, information disseminating agencies, heritage institutions, publishing industry  and many other sectors.

The immense possibilities of inter-operability and new competencies generated by the applications of ICTs make greater cross-sectoral collaborations attainable in future. India is emerging as a leading player in the knowledge economy. The cross-sectoral collaborations among agencies and institutions involved in creation, conservation and dissemination of knowledge resources are also developing.

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) plans to offer a forum for encouraging greater collaborations by organizing an international conference on “Building Knowledge Repositories: Cross-Sectoral Collaborations” in February 2008 at New Delhi.
